Every day, billions of microorganisms—including bacteria, fungi and other microbial communities—interact with your skin, its barrier, its chemistry and its environment. These microorganisms are not simply contaminants waiting to be removed. Many participate in the complex ecosystem that helps the skin function as a protective barrier.

Modern skin microbiome research is changing how scientists think about skincare.

The question is no longer simply:

“What ingredient should I put on my skin?”

A more important question is:

“How does the finished formulation interact with the biological environment of my skin?”

The skin microbiome is the community of microorganisms and their genetic material associated with the skin.

The composition of these communities is not identical everywhere.

Sudhir Shah is the founder and chief scientist of OM Botanical, a North Carolina-based plant-based skincare company integrating Ayurvedic botanical traditions with modern formulation science and skin biology.

With a background in molecular biology and a long-standing interest in Ayurveda, Shah approaches skincare from the perspective that effective formulation requires understanding both the ingredients and the biological environment in which they are used.
