We ask a different question:
If the aqueous phase is going to make up a significant portion of a skincare product, can that phase contribute something meaningful to the formulation?
That question led us toward aloe vera.
Instead of thinking of the water phase as merely a carrier for other ingredients, we can use an aloe-based aqueous phase where appropriate.

Water is necessary.
But we don't believe every formulation needs to treat water as the most important ingredient simply because it is inexpensive and convenient.

15. “Antibacterial” Is Not Automatically Better
For years, skincare marketing often implied that eliminating bacteria was inherently beneficial.
Modern understanding is more nuanced.
The skin microbiome contains many microorganisms that coexist with us.
Some contribute to colonization resistance and other aspects of skin homeostasis.
Therefore, the objective of skincare should not be to eliminate microorganisms indiscriminately.
The better question is:
What is the appropriate level of cleansing and antimicrobial activity for the intended purpose?
This is particularly relevant to everyday skincare.
A daily facial cleanser has a different purpose from a hospital disinfectant.
The formulation should reflect that difference.
16. Our Approach to Surfactants
Cleansing is another area where “stronger” is not necessarily “better.”
Surfactants are designed to remove oils and other substances from the skin.
That is exactly why they work.
But excessive cleansing can remove more than consumers intended.
